Emergency Vehicle Conversions: Ambulances for COVID-19 pandemic

Picture

As Southern Africa, together with the rest of the world, realised the seriousness of the COVID pandemic, the need for ambulances and other emergency vehicles quickly increased. At EVC, we have been involved in a number of projects and continue to assist our clients with a variety of vehicle solutions to enable them to better cope with the urgent health requirements of the pandemic. Some of the projects we have completed include the following:

Lesotho Emergency Medical Services
We designed and built two custom-built 4x4 ambulances for the United Nations Development Programme in Lesotho who in turn donated the ambulances to the end user. The ambulances are based on Toyota Landcruiser single cab pick-ups and fitted with an EVC Ambulance Canopy incorporating insulation, roll over protection and a double skin. The interior ambulance conversion includes a squadbench, attendant seat, equipment cabinet, oxygen system and interior lighting. Emergency warning devices and reflective branding were fitted to the exterior of the ambulance. A self-loading stretcher and a full set of basic life support equipment were supplied with each ambulance. These custom built ambulances will enable the emergency services to reach remote areas in the Mountain Kingdom and offer a functional and safe treatment and transport platform.

Eswatini Emergency Medical Services
The Kingdom of Eswatini Ministry of Health has expanded their fleet of emergency medical vehicles including customised ambulances for highly infectious patients and a mass casualty disaster bus. Three Toyota Quantums have been specifically designed by EVC to handle these patients and equipped with medical equipment including a negative pressure isolation pods supplied by EVC. The highly infectious patient ambulances are able to be easily cleaned and sterilised.

Zimbabwe: private donor
A private company in Zimbabwe contacted us with a plan to provide three ambulances to health facilities in Zimbabwe.  Two Toyota Quantums and one Toyota Landcruiser were designed, built and shipped to Zimbabwe for distribution to these facilities that urgently needed the ambulances. Each ambulance was supplied with medical equipment.

Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services
EVC was contacted by the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services very early in the pandemic with an urgent requirement to expand their fleet of mortuary vehicles for the province. These custom vehicles were completed in record time and delivered to the department.

Along with the above four clients, EVC has built a number of ambulances and mobile clinics specifically focused on providing assistance in the fight against COVID-19.

We would like to commend and sincerely thank all the members of the Emergency Medical Services and Health Services in general for their relentless efforts in preserving life during a particularly difficult time.
