In the previous edition of the FRI Product News, we looked at some of the major advantages of including a PyroUHP in your fleet of fire response vehicles…no, in fact, why it should be the first unit out by the doors to respond to an fire incident…light, agile, fast with immense hitting power were the reasons that we rendered. The first is that because of the micro size of the droplets that the rapid conversion to vapour/steam, the humidity of the environment is substantially increased to, as some tests have shown, > 30 percent. This increases the fuel moisture and has a direct impact on flame length, rate of spread, energy release, amount of smoke produced and, ultimately on the ability of the fire to sustain itself.
The second is the velocity at which the water is propelled into the fire environment. The higher velocity, when compared to traditional fire fighting methods, penetrates the buoyant fire plume and over comes the turbulence associated with a fire. In a micro example, we do not use water to extinguish a candle flame, we use velocity. Same principal applied with PyroUHP except that we apply the velocity through the use of micro droplets of water.
The third is the ‘hang time’ of the micro droplets. The PyroUHP water droplet is 1/64th that of the standard water droplet used in conventional systems. This increases the surface are of application by 12 to 16 times. These small droplets remain in the thermal layer for longer periods of time to allow increased heat reduction. The droplets are also pulled into the flow path of the fire and suppress fires that are beyond the reach of the nozzleman and out of view.
