Presentation 1: Prevention of fast fires
Speaker: Dr Michael J Falkowski
Affiliation: Programme manager, NASA Wildland Fire Programme, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC
Dr Falkowski will explore how fire, while a natural and essential ecological process, is becoming more frequent, faster and more hazardous due to various global factors. His talk will highlight how Earth Observation data is being used to monitor changes in fire regimes and present innovative solutions for fire mitigation, management and recovery. Learn how these strategies can help build more resilient communities in the face of increasing wildfire threats.

Speaker: Dr Jennifer K Balch
Affiliation: Director, Environmental Data Science Innovation and Inclusion Lab (ESIIL), University of Colorado-Boulder
Dr Balch’s research focuses on the three key ingredients for fire: available fuel, hot and dry conditions and ignition sources; all of which are being altered by human activity. She will discuss the dramatic rise in wildfires, burned areas, and fire speed, particularly in the western US and the economic toll, over $16 billion in recent years. Dr Balch will share insights on how we can adapt to this new reality by learning to “burn better and build better.”

IFE Exams 6 October 2025
Registration is now open for the Institution of Fire Engineers October 2025 examinations.
Qualifications offered
The IFE qualifications are regulated by Ofqual, ensuring their recognition in the UK and internationally. Candidates who obtain IFE qualifications can apply to SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) for an evaluation against the South African NQF (National Qualifications Framework) system. These qualifications include:

IFE Exams 6 October 2025
Registration is now open for the Institution of Fire Engineers October 2025 examinations.
- March 2025 exam results date: 14 July 2025. An email will be issued at 09h00 on results day and candidates can log into MyIFE to access results and certificates.
- October 2025 registration deadline: 25 July 2025
- Late entries: Accepted until 2 August 2025, at double the standard costs. It is advised to submit entries by the official closing date to avoid these fees.

- Level 2 Award in Passive Fire Protection: Building structural frame and flame retardant coatings
- Level 2 Award in Passive Fire Protection: Walls, floors, ceilings and glazing
- Level 2 Award in Passive Fire Protection: Fire stopping, barriers, duct work and dampers
- Level 2 Award in Passive Fire Protection: Doors and shutters
- Level 3 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection
In person exams only
- Level 3 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations, Fire Safety and Management
- Award 1: Fire Engineering Science (L3C1)
- Award 2: Fire Operations (L3C2)
- Award 3: Fire Safety (L3C3)
- Award 4: Management and Administration (L3C4)
- Level 3 Diploma in Fire Science and Fire Safety (L3D6) - only Fire service operations and incident command exam is available in this exam session
