Small fan, big impact: The Super Vac Nano for confined space ventilation from Vanguard Fire and Safety

Confined space entry remains one of the most dangerous activities in industrial environments. From municipal infrastructure and utilities to petrochemical plants and refineries, workers entering tanks, pits, vaults and manholes face the constant risk of toxic gases, oxygen deficiency and the accumulation of hazardous fumes. While strict procedures and gas monitoring play an essential role in safety, effective confined space ventilation (CSV) is often the most practical way to reduce these risks before and during entry. This is where the Super Vac Nano stands out.

Supplied in South Africa by Vanguard Fire and Safety, the Nano is an 8-inch (203mm) confined space ventilation fan designed to deliver powerful airflow in an extremely compact and portable package. Despite its small footprint, the Nano produces an impressive 1,760m³/h (1,037CFM) of airflow, making it one of the highest-performing fans in its class.

The Nano is designed for flexibility in the field. It can be used for both positive pressure ventilation, supplying fresh air into a confined space and negative pressure ventilation, extracting contaminated air and fumes. With ducting able to be attached to either end of the fan, crews can quickly configure the system to suit the specific ventilation requirements of a site.

Portability is another key advantage. Measuring only 292 × 273 × 406mm and weighing just 9kg, the Nano is easy for a single operator to transport and deploy. Integrated carry handles and a compact design allow it to be stored in vehicle compartments or equipment lockers without taking up valuable space. The unit is powered by a 1/3hp totally enclosed air over (TEAO) motor, delivering reliable airflow performance while protecting the motor from dust and debris commonly found in industrial environments.

For environments where ignition risk is a concern, Super Vac also offers the intrinsically safe Nano P8XE. This version features a hazardous-location rated motor, allowing it to be safely used in areas where flammable gases or vapours may be present. This makes it particularly suitable for applications in petrochemical plants, refineries and other hazardous industrial facilities.

The Nano system is supported by a range of specialised accessories designed to maximise its effectiveness in confined spaces. Spiral ventilation ducts, available in 4.5m and 7.5m lengths, are constructed from durable neoprene-impregnated polyester fabric reinforced with a continuous spring steel helix for strength and longevity. For hazardous environments, static-dissipating ducting is available to safely conduct electrical charges away from the airflow.

One of the more innovative accessories is the L-shaped duct system, designed specifically for ventilating deep manholes while still allowing workers and equipment to pass through the opening. Options are also available with arc and flame-resistant ballistic fabric, providing additional protection in high-risk industrial environments.

Backed by a five-year manufacturer warranty, the Super Vac Nano combines portability, durability and industry-leading airflow in a compact design.

For South African industries looking to improve safety during confined space entry, the Nano provides a practical and powerful ventilation solution proving that when it comes to confined space safety, sometimes the smallest equipment can make the biggest difference.
