Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management: Stepping stone to success

Picture

Since its inception in 2014, 158 students have graduated from the Nelson Mandela University’s Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management (HCVM) at its George Campus. The NMU is proud of the diversity of students that graduate from the programme in particular the large percentage of women. The HCVM is a unique offering where experienced highly qualified professionals, from ecologists to fire chiefs and students straight from the school benches can learn and benefit together in one classroom. Most HCVM graduates pursue further qualifications in natural resource management offered at the NMU George Campus where fire plays a vital role in sustainability such as Forestry and Nature Conservation.

“As a fire ecologist for South African National Parks, it was very exciting to be part of and qualify from the inaugural implementation of the Higher Certification of Veld fire Managers course at NMU. This course is the first of its kind in South Africa and offers the student an opportunity to qualify with a tertiary qualification as a Veld fire Manager. In this course, fire is not merely a module but rather the entire focus allowing for much more in-depth teaching and therefore more understanding. You are not just a fire fighter but once the course is completed you have all the skills to be a fire manager in our fire prone county,” said Navashni Govender, senior manager: Conservation, Kruger National Park.

Prospective students will gain insight into fire principles, fire legislation, urban interface management, human resource management and leadership, basic financial management, integrated fire management and incident management systems.
The qualification is offered in both full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) options. To avoid disappointment be sure to apply online (https://www.mandela.ac.za/Study-at-Mandela/Application/Apply-Undergraduate) as soon as applications open in April.
