Tshwane fire crews fight several structure fires in Mnandi in Olievenhoutsbosch, Pretoria
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services responded to several thatched buildings on fire in Olievenhoutsbosch in Centurion, Pretoria on Friday, 27 January 2023. Charles Mabaso, deputy chief: public information and liaison officer at the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “When crews arrived on scene, they found that four thatched roof houses were already on fire and their roofs had collapsed.”
He added, “Response included Station 3 with a rescue pumper and five personnel, Station 12 with a tanker and two personnel as well as a RIV with two personnel. ER24 ambulance was on scene with two personnel as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS).”
“Crews evacuated the people who were around the buildings and connected one 65mm hose from Tanker 31 to protect the unburned building. Six buildings with thatched roofs burnt down but fire fighters managed to safe the seventh building. Operations took three hours. Damage included nursery equipment and other construction equipment”, said Mabaso.
“Challenges faced included lack of personnel, radios that lost signal and the informal settlements.”
