Building completely destroyed in a violent fire in the Temis area in Besançon, France

The firefighters responded on Sunday, 5 May 2024, in the early evening for a violent fire on rue Alain Savary in Besançon, France. A building was completely ravaged by flames, near the Nicolas Ledoux high school. 44 firefighters were mobilised. The thick black smoke was visible for miles around. It was a building being deconstructed, mainly made of wood, belonging to the company Aktya, the corporate real estate company of Greater Besançon. The mayor of Besançon, Anne Vignot, arrived on the scene around 20h30.
Sunday evening, the fire was extremely rapid and incredibly powerful. The firefighters chose to prioritize the safety of the surrounding buildings, because some windows were starting to burst due to the heat released by the fire. For the old office building, it was too late.
“It is a building which was in the process of being deconstructed, a wooden frame building which explains the significant calorific potential”, said Stéphane Beaudoux, director of Doubs Fire and Rescue Services.
An acrid smell of smoke, caked on the ground by the rain. On Monday morning in Temis, there were still some onlookers who couldn’t believe their eyes. The fire was still smouldering. Firefighters equipped with ladders were still present to water the fire, monitor the site and ward off any resumption of flames. In the remains of the building, wood was still burning.
Where is the investigation?
In the debris of the fire, forensic investigators began this Monday morning to make their first findings. Material samples will be taken as soon as the fire site is made accessible and the intervention is completed. “It actually suggests more of an intentional action” confides police commander Christophe Touris to France 3 Franche-Comté. Investigators will try to determine where the fire started and if oxidiser was used. Or if it was elements of the deconstruction of the building that caused the fire. The use of video surveillance will perhaps allow us to find out more.
Two complaints will be filed, one by AKTYA, the other by the town hall of Besançon.
