Cape Town inner-city bar balcony collapse injures 21 people

21 people were injured after a balcony collapsed at The Athletic Club and Social on Castle Street in Cape Town’s central business district on Thursday evening, 2 November 2023. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson at the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, said, “The incident occurred on the 2 November 2023 and was reported at approximately 17h50. Roeland Street Fire Station responded with a motor pump and Lakeside Fire Station with a rescue vehicle.”
“There were various other role players on scene. This was a collapse of a balcony that was seemingly used as decorative purposes/aesthetic value. Crews assisted with triage of the patients, rendering medical assistance and secured the air-conditioning units for overall scene safety. Our crews left the scene shortly after 19h00,” said Carelse.
He added, “The patients sustained various injuries and was colour coded from green to yellow. They were transported to medical facility. Challenges faced were just the number of patients and the access to the scene: as this happened in the CBD, it garnered a lot of attention quickly.”
Alderman JP Smith said in a social media post that injured patients were attended to with 11 patients having slight injuries, nine with moderate injuries and one patient with a serious injury that was transported to receive medical attention.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, confirmed that the incident occurred at around 17h50. “The exact circumstances are not known. A total of 21 patients were taken to various hospitals … a city building inspector is on site,” Powell said.
