Fire stations of the world: Port Stanley Net Zero Fire Station, Ontario, Canada
The Municipality of Central
Elgin and the Central Elgin Fire Rescue officially opened the Municipality's
newest Fire Station in July 2022. Located at 4980 Sunset Drive, this station is
the first net zero energy fire station in Canada. It extends their established
high level of fire service with prompt response times to their expanding community
in this area. The facility measures approximately 10 000 sq ft. Heating is
supplied by a geothermal system and hydro is provided by solar panels that are
installed on carport structures of the parking lot. This building is the new
home for Central Elgin Fire Rescue's pumper, rescue and areal platform.
This is the first fire station in Canada that is completely identified as “net zero energy”.
The new station is equipped with three double drive through apparatus bays. The building is designed to post-disaster standards.
Structurally, the building is designed as a cross laminated timber (CLT) and Glulam framed structure. The CLT panel assembly will provide the shear wall and roof decking assembly while the Glulam beams and columns will provide the clear spanning space within the truck apparatus bay and the front end feature window.
Doors
The new fire station has been outfitted with three Door Engineering FF300 four-fold doors and three A175 Safedrive springless high-speed sectional doors at the new station. Both high-performance door systems complement the outstanding aesthetics of the new station with its imported Austrian Timber Beams and CLT panels. These high-performance doors will help conserve valuable energy to help it remain a net-zero energy building. In addition to providing great value and reliability through the lifespan of this new facility.
The high operating speeds of the doors lead to energy-efficient operation by minimizing outside air infiltration during operation. The four-fold boosts opening speeds of up to 24″/sec minimise heat or cooling loss and increase throughput. While Safedrive springless operators can open overhead doors up to three times faster than traditional jackshaft operators. All of which contributed to the net-zero energy of this fire station.
In addition to high speeds, the springless design of these doors reduces maintenance costs and improves reliability in daily operations.
Finally, the full visibility of the doors prevents accidental impact from vehicles and improves safety.
The project was funded through the Green Municipal Fund (GMF).
