Five dead, 48 injured after bus overturns on N2 near Swellendam
Five people have died and 48 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Swellendam in the Western Cape on Friday, 28 April 2023. The provincial government said traffic officials and SAPS had closed all the lanes and managed the traffic.
In a joint statement, Premier Alan Winde, Health and Wellness MEC Nomafrench Mbombo and Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie said the bus overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Mbombo said the critically injured patients had been airlifted to Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and George hospitals. She said emergency services also referred some to Worcester Regional Hospital. Some received treatment from the scene, others at the local clinic and some at Swellendam Hospital.
The Bishop of Table Bay for the Anglican Church, Joshua Louw, has described the fatal bus accident as a very tragic event. The five people that were killed and those injured in the incident were parishioners from the St Aidan's Anglican Church in Landsdowne when their bus overturned. They were on their way back to Cape Town from a church retreat in the Southern Cape. Bishop Louw said that they will continue to keep the families and friends of the deceased and those injured in their prayers. "I just want to start by saying thank you very much for the wonderful support, the prayers that have gone out. It is overwhelming to know that in times of tragedy we as the people can stand together and just give the necessary support."
Premier Winde conveyed his condolences to the victims' families. "I would like to send my most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. For now, we are focused on a coordinated response to give all victims the best possible care and ensure safety at the scene."
