Two killed in aircraft crash in Springs, Ekurhuleni

A pilot and a passenger were killed after the Jodel F12 homebuilt fixed-wing aircraft crashed at Springs in Ekurhuleni on Saturday, 14 October 2023. The pilot and owner of the aircraft was Fanie (Bez) Bezuidenhout, an ex fire fighter and a member of the Association of Former Fire Chiefs and Commanders (AFFCC).
Bez and his passenger sadly died and the aircraft was destroyed.
Preliminary information indicates the airplane was passing by three to four times for photographers. Review of an online video shows that the right wing abruptly pitched up, followed by the left wing.
This F12 was privately built in the late 70s and restored to flying condition in 1986 by Fanie (Bez) Bezuidenhout.
“Bez started his career in Pretoria Fire Department, served in the Bophuthatswana Fire Service and was at one stage the chief fire officer at the Eskom Kriel Fire Station. In the early 90s, he was appointed as station officer at Meyerton Fire Department and was acting assistant chief at the same when the fire services of the Vaal Triangle amalgamated under the new dispensation. He was then appointed as senior station officer at Lekoa Vaal Fire Service based in Vereeniging. He later changed his career path focussing on safety, which he was still doing at the time of his demise,” said his long-time friend, Deon Earle.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) said its accident and incident investigations division (AIID) is probing the light aircraft crash. In a statement, the authority said the pilot and a passenger were killed when their Cruiser home built fixed-wing aircraft crashed. SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola said the aircraft was destroyed on impact.
He said the aircraft was departing from the Springs Airfield with the intention of returning to the same airstrip.
The AIID team was deployed to collect evidence. “A preliminary report will be issued in 30 days from the day of this accident. It is vital to point out that investigations vary in size and complexity and may take up to 12 months to complete. In instances where an investigation takes longer than 12 months to complete, the AIID will issue an interim statement to indicate the progress made up to that point of the investigation,” said Majola.
