E-bike fire kills seven-year-old and teen, four others jump out windows to escape Queens apartment fire, US
A fast-moving fire started by a lithium-ion battery killed a seven-year-old and a teenager in a Queens apartment building in New York City in the US on Monday, 10 April 2023. Five children and one adult were in the second-storey apartment when the fire broke out around 14h00 in the building at 25-71 46th Street in Astoria. Several family members jumped out of windows to escape the fire but two victims, aged 7 and 19, could not escape.
Fire fighters were on the scene of the fire within three minutes of the call out but the explosive nature of the fire spread it throughout the second floor apartment.
The fire marks the 59th fire in New York this year caused by lithium-ion batteries. Five people have died in those fires.
