Six killed in R61 head-on collision, Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal
Six people were killed in a head-on collision on the R61 near Port Edward in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 10 October 2022. Ray Nkonyeni Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management station officer Pravesh Ramchander said, “The incident was reported at 16h40 of a multi vehicle collision. The incident occurred on the R61 near Port Edward within Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. It is believed that there was a head on collision between a hatchback and a light delivery vehicle resulting in entrapments. Both lanes were closed to deal with operations, salvage and overhaul.”
Ramchander added, “Fire services responded with a rapid response unit. Other emergency services in attendance were SAPS, Med Evac, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality law enforcement, RTI, EMRS, Netcare and MLM. Rescue equipment was used by Fire Services to extricate the entrapped.” “Six fatalities including two minors and five other injuries were reported and transported to hospital for further treatment.
