70 fire fighters deployed to office fire in Montague Gardens, Cape Town
About 70 City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service fire fighters were deployed to Phumelela Office Park in Montague Gardens, where an office building is alight on Thursday, 8 December 2022. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson at the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service said, “The incident was reported at 03h17am of a textile building alight, Sparks and Ellis as well as Nu World Industries.”
Carelse added, “Our response included a motor pump, water tanker and skid unit from Milnerton Fire Station, a motor pump each from Brooklyn, Melkbos Strand, Constantia, Goodwood, Bellville, Salt River and Brackenfell fire stations respectively, a breathing apparatus vehicle from Belhar and a motor pump and hydraulic platform from Roeland Street Fire Station.” “Operations consisted of direct attack to ensure the containment of the fire. Relief crews were utilised to attend to the various hotspots and flare ups over the period. The entire building was gutted in the fire. No injuries were reported. Challenges faced include the construction of the building, which was challenging to crews. The roof caved in, the metal sheeting posed a hazard to fire fighters and it took time to move this debris out of the way to get to the hotspots. The heaps of material smouldered and it was a laborious task,” he said. “The fire was eventually extinguished on 12 December at approximately 11h45am”, Carelse concluded. The cause of the fire is unknown. Source: Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service |
