New R17 million fire station in Robertson unveiled to improve fire services in the Langeberg area, Western Cape

The new Langeberg Fire Station in Church Street, Robertson, was formally opened on 7 February 2024, by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, MEC for Local Government Minister Anton Bredell, a delegation led by Alderman Schalk Van Eeden, the Executive Mayor of Langeberg Municipality and other government representatives. The Langeberg Fire Station, constructed at a cost of R17 million, is a significant investment in the safety and security of the Langeberg community and is headed up by CFO Nkosinathi Mdluli.
Construction of the fire station, on an open field located next to the Disaster Management Office, commenced in April 2023. This location allows easy access to the R60, which connects to all our towns and feeder routes.
The fire station was built to accommodate operations on a 24-hour basis. The new double-storey building consists of a reception lobby, a watch room, offices, a boardroom, a lecture room, ablution facilities, kitchen facilities, sufficient storerooms, a gymnasium and sleeping quarters. The machine bay can accommodate six fire engines as well as a wash bay.
The building can operate as a Joint Operations Centre should a disaster or major incident take place in the Langeberg area.
In his keynote address, Premier Alan Winde, Premier of the Western Cape, expressed the importance of strengthening responsiveness to a crisis in the province. “I was looking at news headlines on how other countries deal with a crisis and it’s evident that we as a province have an excellent ability to prepare and respond to a crisis. We often see how municipalities reach out to support one another, whether it’s delivering water or providing additional fire services and I am sure this fire station will allow for such collaboration as well.”
He expressed his gratitude to the Langeberg Municipality and all those who helped make the opening of the Robertson Fire Station such a historic occasion.
Before the construction of the Langeberg Fire Station, the satellite fire station was based in Ashton. The needs of the Langeberg firefighting unit to service all five towns and neighbouring farms could not be met.
Those present were treated to a squad drill performance of the fire fighters. The premier was taken on a guided tour through the facility before the official unveiling of the plaque and cutting of the ribbon. A long-standing tradition ended the day where firefighters pushed the fire engine into the newly built machine bay.
