Rest in Peace, Trevor Phillips

Letaba Fire Protection Association and Limpopo Umbrella FPA chairperson, Trevor Phillips, passed on Monday, 7 August 2023. Trevor leaves behind his wife Mariska, daughter Zané aged 18, son Matthew aged 16, daughter Sarah-Leigh aged 10, his parents Robin and Dale, his sister Shaneen and brother Douglas.

Trevor was a friend for more than 20 years.

Trevor Darryl Phillips was born on 29 April 1971. He went to St Peter's Primary School in Johannesburg and to Michaelhouse Senior Boys School. Trevor studied at Nelson Mandela University George Campus, the known as Saasveld for his Diploma in Forestry and his B-Tech in Forestry. He completed his MBA at the University of Pretoria.

Trevor has been married to Mariska for 22 years and eight months. “He was such a loving husband and a wonderful father to our three children, a big family man who always attended all his children’s sports events”, said Mariska.

He worked at Steven’s Lumber for 27 years where he was instrumental in implementing harvesting programmes and fire prevention and fighting. He started Letaba FPA in 2007 and has been chairperson since then. He also started the Limpopo UFPA and has been its chairperson, all solely voluntary.

Trevor was also part of the Haenertsburg Community Neighbourhood Watch and very involved in the community overall.

He started his own business, Forestry Fire, as a forestry and fire consultant, two years ago.

Trevor was Forestry South Africa’s Limpopo Committee group secretary from 2007 to 2018; then group chair from 2018-2021 and as group chair served on FSA General Committee. He served on Forestry South Africa’s Fire Committee since 2016 to date. “It is truly a sad loss for so many whose lives Trevor had touched. As an FSA office bearer, Trevor contributed significantly to the Sector and was always willing to share his experience and knowledge”, said Forestry South Africa’s Dr Ronald Heath.

Letaba FPA’s Rouan Snyman said, “The FPA was like his baby and he left big shoes to fill. Letaba FPA has grown to be one of the most successful FPAs in Limpopo. Trevor also served on the National Veld and Forest Fire Protection Advisory Forum.”

Their Facebook page message: Trevor has been the Letaba Fire Protection Association Chairperson for many years and was a massive   asset to the industry. His love for fire fighting and helping the community was beyond what any person has experienced. He will be dearly missed and large footprints on the mountain will be difficult to fill. Rest easy Trev, It was a privilege knowing you and honour working with you.”

Below are some of the family members’ messages.

Letter from ouma and Oupa
Liefste Trevor.

Letter from Mariska (wife)
To my darling Trevor or like I called you, my lovie. The  hardest moment in my life was when I had to say goodbye to you. When your heart stopped, I broke into a million pieces. I know that you are now with our Heavenly Father in a perfect body. God will put me together again but the piece where you were will always be empty

Thank you for the wonderful 22 years and eight months that we were married and our 3 wonderful kids.  I wished we had 30 more together. You were an awesome husband and father that never missed an important event in our lives. You were my rock, my place of safety. I am going to miss your wisdom and humour. We never had a dull moment with you. I love you with my whole heart but a big piece left with you. I will always love you.  Yesterday, today and forever.

Letter from daughter Zané
Daddy, I would give anything for one more day, one more I love you and one more hug and a kiss. But even though you are not physically here anymore your heart is and I will carry it with me wherever I go, I will carry the lessons and the love you have thought me as well. You gave me memories and moments that I will never forget, you made me laugh that I couldn’t breathe, I’ve never laughed so hard or smiled so big then the times I was with you. If that was all I had gotten from you I would have been lucky but I got even luckier. I got the most amazing dad, although you had your, as you would call it “strange daddy” moments, I will still forever love you for them, I got a dad that showed me what a good man looks like, a dad that set an example of how to be a Godly and loving person, a dad that thought me to love and care for others. But I am not just lucky, I’m blessed to have you as my daddy and I could not have asked God for a better dad. Someday we will meet again and you will be able to make your corny dad jokes that always seemed to get me to laugh and you will get to embarrass me again with your weird little dance. But until that day I will find comfort in knowing that you are still with me and that you still love me very much. It broke my heart to lose you but you didn’t go alone because a part of me went with you when God came to take you home. I loved you then, I love you now and I will love you forever. Forever your cutiepie, Zané

Letter from son Matthew
My dad was a wonderful man. He never said no to a challenge or when somebody needed help. It was always nice to go to fires with him and to help where I could. I'm going to miss his jokes and having to make tea for him every night. He was an excellent father and helped where he could around the house. I'm going to miss you so much. Love Matthew.

Letter from daughter Sarah-Leigh
My pa was die beste in die wêreld. Daddy, I will always love you, for ever and ever.

Rest in Peace, Trevor. Our deepest condolences to Mariska, the kids, family members, colleagues and friends.  Thank you to Mariska, Rouan and Ronald for their contributions to this obituary.
