Ekurhuleni crews respond to electrical sub-station fire in Springs
An electrical sub-station on Paul Kruger Highway in Springs, Ekurhuleni, caught alight on Tuesday, 8 November 2022, at 08h50am. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS, said, “Fire and rescue services from Springs Central Fire Station were notified immediately and swiftly responded to the scene with a major pumper and hydraulic platform. On arrival forcible entry was initiated and successfully achieved. Backup from Kwa-Thema and Brakpan fire stations was activated immediately due to risk and magnitude of the blaze.”
Ntladi added, “Kwa-Thema responded with a major pumper and Brakpan with a water tanker. A technician was called on scene and after confirmation of power isolation, two 45mm diameter attack lines were used to contain and extinguish the blaze. Crews connected direct from the fire hydrant for sustainable water supply. Within no time, the flames were extinguished and all hot spots cooled off. Positive pressure ventilator (PPV) was also used for clearer view and cooling. Nine panels were found to have been damaged by flames. The cause of the fire is still undetermined and under investigations.” “The scene was handed over to the electrical department for further investigations, repairs and restoration of power supply. The call was logged at 08h50 in the morning and crews returned back to respective stations at 11h28. Nine electrical panels burnt and fortunately no casualties recorded on scene. Challenges faced included waiting for the arrival of a technician to isolate power and give safety signal.
