Four South African firefighters excel at the Aramco 2024 Challenge in Saudi Arabia
Four South African firefighters participated in the Aramco Firefighter Challenge 2024 in Saudi Arabia in March 2024. They are Emile and Bonnie Conrad from Garden Route District Municipality and Baigum Abrahams and Alno Kroon from the City of Cape Town. They competed in the Toughest Firefighter Alive Individuals and Relays as well as the Stair Run Challenge (16 storey building). The 2024 Aramco Firefighting Challenge concluded successfully, attract nearly 87 246 visitors, including more than 10 000 children, making it one of the most attended and interactive events of the year.
Held over several days, the event featured a variety of demonstrations and practical training in firefighting and safety, as well as engaging competitions that captured the interest of both adults and children.
A large number of specialists and experts in firefighting from around the world participated in the event, presenting the latest technologies and strategies in this critical field. Workshops and educational sessions offered visitors a unique opportunity to learn and interact directly with experts, enhancing their awareness of safety and fire prevention.
Children, who made up a significant portion of the attendees, enjoyed activities designed specifically for them, including hands-on experiments and educational games aimed at instilling safety principles from a young age. These activities were not only entertaining but also an opportunity to instil awareness of potential hazards and how to safely manage them.

South Africa came eighth in the relay and also brought home some gold, silver and bronze medals for both the individual challenges and the stair climb! Emile even appeared on one of the supersized banners and a video!
