Firefighting Thrush aircraft hits overhead cables and explodes in Chile

A Chilean firefighter Thrush S2R- T660 crashed into a road in a fiery inferno after it snagged on electricity poles while flying low. The crash, which killed the pilot and injured four other people, took place on a road near the Panguilemo Aerodrome in Talca, a commune in Chile’s Maule region, on Monday afternoon, 15 January 2024. The pilot, Spaniard Fernando Solans Robles, aged 58, was killed as he and a colleague were mobilised to deal with a fire near an aerodrome in Talca in central Chile.
“The Regional Operations Centre made contact with aircraft AC-11 and AC-13 at 16h24 hrs. To begin fighting the fire called "San Juan" next to the Panguilemo Airfield. Due to a manoeuvre by the small plane (which is under investigation), it crashed on the eastern side of Route 5 South at KM 246. As a result of the accident, four people were injured as a result of the accident, all of the injured people were in the vicinity of the aircraft fall. The people are civilians who were at the scene.”
“At the time of capping the aircraft, a truck that was parked at the scene was consumed by fire from the aircraft. The pilot belonged to the company Air Andes Chile SPA, which provides services to CONAF. CONAF is working and collaborating with the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics to investigate the causes of the accident.”
“As an institution we regret the tragic accident that occurred and send condolences to the family of Fernando Solans Robles, 58 years old, a professional with vast experience in aerial firefighting. The footage shows cars on a dual carriageway with the aircraft flying towards the camera before it suddenly snagged on some electricity poles and cables, causing its right wing to disintegrate and the aircraft to catch fire. It then came crashing down in a giant fireball and smashed into the road at speed.”
