Young girl survives freak accident when heavy tipper truck overturns on bakkie, Paarl
A young girl was injured in a freak accident that occurred on the R301 from Paarl to Franschhoek, opposite Boschenmeer Estate, on Thursday, 11 May 2023, just after 14h00. A construction vehicle weighing at least 20 tons was dropping its load at a roadwork site when it fell sideways onto a passing bakkie, leaving a young girl stuck in her seat. The heavy truck trailer flattened the passenger side of the vehicle, entrapping a young primary school girl in her seat. Multiple rescue teams including Drakenstein Municipal Fire and Rescue, EMS Rescue, EMS Metro, EMS Ambulance Services, ER24 Ambulance Services, Drakenstein Farm Watch Fire and Rescue NPC, Drakenstein Traffic Services, Paarl SAPS and Forensics, responded to the emergency call. Multiple rescue teams from different organisations worked together for more than two hours, carefully tilting and lifting the truck and cutting the vehicle to pieces to extricate the young girl.
Her father, the driver of the bakkie, miraculously climbed out of the vehicle with light head injuries and scratches, fearing the worst for his daughter, not leaving her side for a moment, participated in the rescue operation. Finally, after carefully tilting and lifting the truck and cutting the vehicle to pieces, the girl was freed. The young patient was loaded into an ambulance and transported to hospital.
The police will investigate this freak accident.
Members of the Drakestein Farm Watch rescue team paid a visit to the child and her parents in the hospital. “We hope the brave young girl will recover fully from this terrible and traumatic ordeal, and we extend our gratitude to all those who assisted in a successful recovery.”
