Assistant fire chief killed in in tanker rollover; second fire fighter hospitalised, Indiana, US
A Farmland Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief died Thursday morning, 25 May 2023, in a rollover of a tanker in Randolph County. The truck rolled on its side as the tanker passed through an S curve at 06h30am near County Roads 1000 West and 400 North in Randolph County in Indiana, US. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which occurred while the department was responding to a barn fire. The Indiana State Police say Osgood and fire fighter Zachary Lee were ejected from the tanker, which then came to rest on top of them.
29-year-old Osgood was pronounced dead at the scene. 19-year-old Lee was flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with serious injuries to the lower part of his body. He has been listed in critical condition while undergoing surgery.
No other fire fighters were in the tanker truck.
A procession of emergency vehicles accompanied an ambulance carrying the fire fighter’s body to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted.
Indiana State Police are investigating the accident.
