Fire fighter dies, three others injured battling Memphis house fire, US

The Memphis Fire Department in Tennessee, US, along with the entire fire fighting community, is mourning the loss of one of its own after a house fire took the life of one fire fighter and nearly killed three others.
According to the Memphis Fire Department, fire crews responded to a home on Rile Street around 123h30 on Tuesday, 18 July 2023 and immediately began battling the fire. While efforts were underway to extinguish the fire, the commanding officer learned several fire fighters had become trapped inside the house and within the fire. One fire fighter died in the fire and three others were transported to the hospital for treatment and were being closely monitored.
Memphis Fire identified the fire fighter killed as Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman. The department said Norman began his career in Memphis in 2002.
Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat says Norman was a leader and hard worker who took pride in serving his community. “With deep grief, we announce the passing of Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman, a courageous and dedicated member of our team who made the ultimate sacrifice. Jeffrey was a leader and hard worker who took pride in serving his community. Lieutenant Norman began his career with the Memphis Fire Department on 23 September 2002 and faithfully served for 20 years. During this unimaginable loss, we extend our condolences to Lieutenant Norman's family, friends, loved ones, and Memphis Fire Department brothers and sisters.”
“We must never forget the bravery and sacrifice that fire fighters exhibit every single day,” said Jim Strickland, the mayor of Memphis. “Also, we should all pray for the family and Memphis Fire Department family who are suffering from this tragic loss and for the fire fighters in the hospital.”
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends and fellow Memphis fire fighters”, Memphis Fire Department.
Multiple fire agencies in Tennessee and across the country are expressing their grief and offering condolences to the Memphis Fire family.
Officials announced Thursday afternoon the fire was arson. The fire started in a dumpster and spread to the carport and house, investigators have determined.
The department has not given an update on the injured fire fighters, who remain hospitalised.
