Primrose Community Library catches fire, Ekurhuleni
The Primrose Library in Germiston has been forced to temporarily shut down after it was partly damaged by a fire early on Tuesday morning, 26 March 2024. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “At 00h28 early hours, District Four firefighters received and responded out to the intersection of Shamrock and Beaconsfield streets in Primrose for a well alight municipal library structure. Primrose Fire Station firefighting crews as primary responders turned-out using Rescue-9 fire engine and backed up by Bedfordview Fire Station firefighters with Grass unit-10. A total of eight firefighters were in attendance.”
“Two minutes after turning out from the station, primary crews arrived on scene and found structure burning. Fire suppression using water as an extinguishing agent was started. Crews connected from fire hydrant for a sustained supply till the operation was completed”, said Ntladi.
He added, “No casualties were accounted for during fire suppression before and after. Fire course inspection was conducted by local Fire Safety Officer. However, the cause of the fire is still undetermined. Crews returned to their respective based stations and arrived at 01h35 the same day, 26 March 2024.”
According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, there was no severe damage to the building but “the fire caused structural damages”.
The fire damaged, among other things, computers, books and the air conditioning system. The cause of the fire remains unknown but the City suspects attempted cable theft. The City is investigating the extent of the damage and the results of the investigation will assist in determining the period for repairs and the reopening date.
