Dramatic midnight rescue after woman falls on Table Mountain, Cape Town
Technical rescuers responded to Table Mountain late on Monday, 19 February 2024, after a 37-year-old rock climber fell and injured herself while scrambling from the top of the climbing route. The 37-year-old Capetonian fell above Africa Crag route but was saved by her safety rope. Injuries to her leg immobilised her where she landed. A Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) team reached the top of the mountain via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. A small rescue team, including a Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS paramedic, abseiled down to the injured climber. She was assessed and treated before being placed into a rescue stretcher. In a carefully coordinated effort, a jockey carefully managed the stretcher over the many obstacles, while the team above slowly hauled the pair up the cliff.
Rescuers used a technical rope hauling system to slowly raise the injured climber up to the top of the cliff. The technical team hauled the woman to safety with rescue ropes, taking her to safety shortly before midnight. The woman was taken to hospital.
