FDNY pulls man from fourth-floor window in dramatic roof rope rescue, New York, US

Fire Department New York (FDNY) fire fighters used a rope rescue to pull a man from the top floor of a building early Tuesday morning, 20 June 2023, in Brooklyn, New York in the US. The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment in a building on 16th Street and 8th Avenue in the Park Slope neighbourhood. Fire fighters arrived just after 06h22am to find a man in his 20s outside the window of a fourth-floor apartment. The victim had escaped the fire in his apartment but was blocked by fire from reaching the building’s fire escape.
Several fire fighters set up a rescue operation, in which one fire fighter rappelled down from the roof and grabbed the trapped resident. Both were then lowered four stories down to the ground.
"This was a roof rope rescue, tying off to a substantial object on the roof and then moving down to the ground," said Deputy Assistant Fire Chief John Sarrocco.
Fire fighter Patrick Gale is the one who grabbed the man. "I was just doing my job. My training kicked in," said Patrick Gale, the fire fighter who was lowered down and secured the victim. "Might've felt like an eternity but it just took a couple minutes."
The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by EMS at the scene. "He was happy, a little bit panicked," said Gale. "Definitely thankful. And we were good to go."
The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
