Traumatic truck accident and explosion on R34 near Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal
A driver’s life was miraculously spared while two people were injured in another horrific accident on the R34 between Ulundi and Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 19 September 2022. In the video that has been widely circulated online, the driver recording shows the first truck crash as he is behind other vehicles that are heading towards the traffic cop directing them past the scene.
The first few vehicles in front of the recording driver are allowed to pass and the traffic cop then stops the recording driver to allow other oncoming vehicles to pass. Shortly after that, a truck which is also seemingly out of control collides with another stationary truck heading in the opposite direction and another vehicle and there is a huge explosion and the vehicles are engulfed in flames. A minibus taxi can also be seen speeding off to safety. According to Arrive Alive, six vehicles were involved in the accident (an SUV, a bakkie and four trucks) and four vehicles were caught alight after the secondary crash and were engulfed in flames. The route has reportedly been used as an alternate route for trucks travelling to Richards Bay, following the horrific crash on the N2 between a truck and a bakkie that was ferrying pupils. The accident reportedly claimed 21 lives including 19 children aged between five and 12 years. Sources: Zululand Observer, The South African |
