Two lives lost in two separate motor vehicle accidents in Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni
Two lives were lost in two separate motor vehicle accidents in Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni. Both incidents happened on Sunday morning, 19 February 2023. The initial call was received at 06h08 while the second accident’s call was received at 08h28. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “The initial crash happened under R24 freeway bridge eastbound Gillooly's interchange where a single vehicle crashed against stationary pillar post with two occupants.”
Ntladi added, “The male driver succumbed due to intense injuries sustained while a male passenger was in a serious but stable condition. The injured was road transported to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg for further care.”
The freeway hat to be temporarily closed for the duration of the rescue operations. Rescuers had to use specialised hydraulic rescue tools to free the entrapped patients.
He said, “About couple of metres away on the same freeway, the R24 westbound, a secondary accident took place between a taxi and a sedan light motor vehicle. The sedan’s driver, who was alone at the time, was unfortunately declared deceased on scene after a long resuscitation attempt. Rescuers from Bedfordview Fire Station extricated the deceased from the wreckage using specialised hydraulic rescue tools. 15 taxi passengers escaped with minimal injuries. All 15 were road transported by various ambulance services to various nearest hospitals around the city.”
Both incidents are under City of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers’ investigation.
