The director of Medi Response KZN, Paul Herbst, who had recently returned from the rescue mission in Turkey, died on Tuesday, 21 February 2023. He was joined by his K9 partner Odi and the South African rescue team under the banner of Gift of The Givers. They had just returned from Turkey on Sunday, where they had assisted in the search for people trapped in the rubble following the devastating earthquakes earlier this month.

Paul was also a friend of Fire and Rescue International and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

Medi Response statement
Medi Response is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Herbst, director of Medi Response KZN. On behalf of the entire team at Medi Response, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

Paul was a well-respected and dedicated leader in the field of emergency medical services. His passion for helping others was evident in the work that he did every day, and he was known for his unwavering commitment to providing care to those in need.

The loss of Paul is a tremendous blow to the community and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. As we mourn his passing, it is important to remember the incredible contributions that he made and the countless lives that he touched along the way.

During this time of grief, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of Paul's family and friends as they navigate through this difficult time. Let us all take a moment to honour his memory and celebrate the legacy of a truly remarkable man. Rest in peace, Paul.

South African Private Ambulance and Emergency Services Association (SAPAESA) statement
Oliver Wright of the South African Private Ambulance and Emergency Services Association (SAPAESA) says Herbst played an important role in the industry. "You would often see Paul undertaking rescue work in conjunction with other agencies that fell outside of his mandate but where he felt an obligation to help. His contribution will certainly be very sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Paul's colleagues, family and his loved ones."

Ahmed Bahm, Gift of the Givers’ statement
“It's really tragic and sad news about Paul. Our deepest condolences to the family. We, as GOTG Foundation, will forever be grateful to Paul's dedication commitment in serving humanity and his legacy will continue to live on.”

Rest in Peace, Paul.

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all." ~ Dale Carnegie
