Two perish and four injured in a gas explosion fire at an Atteridgeville special school , Pretoria

Two people have died and four others injured following a fire from a gas explosion at Zodwa Special School in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. “The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to fire incident resulting from a gas explosion at Zodwa Special School on Maunde Street in Atteridgeville”, said Deputy chief Charles Mabaso, public information and liaison officer for the City of Tshwane Emergency Services. The incident was report around 10:00 on 23 August 2023.
“Fire fighters arrived on the scene to find a collapsed structure of container classrooms that was on fire. They were informed that one person was still trapped in the burning containers. A badly burnt and charred body of a male person was discovered during firefighting operations and a second body of which the gender could not be determined was later discovered as operations continued”, said Mabaso.
“Four other patients were transported by ambulance to Kalafong Hospital before the arrival of the Tshwane Emergency Services on the scene. It is alleged that the in four injured and two deceased are employees of a contractor that was contracted to do repair works on two container classrooms”, he added.
“The fire was subsequently extinguished and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation of circumstance that might have led to the explosion and fire.”
Man arrested
A man has been arrested in connection with the gas explosion. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the man, 49, will be charged with two counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder and arson.
