West Milford fire chief killed by heart attack after train fire, New Jersey, US

Edward J Steines, West Milford’s fire commissioner, Office of Emergency Management coordinator and Department of Public Works director, died Wednesday, 16 August 2023. Chief Steines, aged 64, had served the West Milford Fire Department for more than 40 years.
Steines responded to a train fire in Hardyston Township on Tuesday afternoon at about 14h30. Fire fighters cleared the scene at about 17h00.
“It is with deep regret, the West Milford Fire Department informs the unexpected passing of Fire Commissioner Ed Steines. Chief Steines was a member of the West Milford Fire Department for over 40 years. In 2000 he took on the role of Fire Commissioner. Commissioner Steines was also a member of West Milford First Aid Squad and also worked for the West Milford Department of Public Works taking the role of DPW director in 2016. Commissioner Steines also served as the township OEM Coordinator since 2011”, read the statement.
“Commissioner Steines was a huge asset to the township but was also a great friend and brother to all. Was never hesitant to jump in and help out on any call and cherished all the organizations he was a part of. Nothing but laughs jokes and memories that will never be forgotten. A devastating loss to the township and he will be greatly missed. We love you Ed and you will not be forgotten.”
