Fire breaks out at Mooikloof electrical substation in Pretoria

A fire broke out at the Mooikloof substation in Pretoria on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. Deputy chief Charles Mabaso, public information and liaison officer for the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “We received a call from the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) at 23h01 informing us of a substation on fire at Mooikloof sub-station. The fire could be seen from a remote distance. Upon arrival, command 764 had already established command on the northern side of the substation and video unit Siera 762 was on scene. There were two fire spots, the substation and the switch room (panel boards).”
Mabaso added, “We requested electricity department officials to issue certificate of isolation. At 23h45 electricity officials entered the premises to shut off the power and issued the electricity work permit at 23h54.”
Three fire stations responded including Station 11 with a ladder and a company commander with four leading firefighters, Station 1 with a command vehicle and a company commander and four leading firefighters as well as a video unit with a leading firefighter and station 4 with a rescue pumper with a company commander and four leading firefighters, command unit with district commander a leading firefighter and a flatbed foam tender with a leading firefighter.
“A driveline was deployed with two attack lines, firefighting operation commenced with foam, plus 32 foam cans were used in addition to the foam carried in the tank. Ladder 111 and Foam layer 41 arrived on scene. Mooikloof substation was well alight, panel boards were burning with visible black smoke. The fire was extinguished and cooling continued: no injuries encountered. At 00h45 damping down commenced. The eectricity department officials/technicians made a work about assessing and identified the damages to be intense. At 01h40 damping down was completed and vehicle and equipment making up performed”, said Mabaso.
Challenges encountered included waiting for the electricity work permit.

The crew managed to arrive at the incident on time and achieve the objectives with no injuries. The chain of command and the coordination of sectors.
“Additional personnel activated or informed of the incident included Deputy Chief Modise and Assistant Swanepoel. The firefighting operation went smooth and electricity work permit was issued by the system controller Maleka at 23h56 to confirm the power shut off”, concluded Mabaso.
