Jedi becomes South Africa’s first search and rescue K9 dog to fly in cabin on commercial flight
One of South Africa’s awesome K9 Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs, Jedi, has made history as the first SAR K9 to fly in the cabin of a commercial flight. The test flight took place between Johannesburg and Cape Town on Saturday 13 May 2023 and was supported by Lift Airlines, according to K9 Search and Rescue Association of South Africa (SARA). K9 SARA said, “We embarked on a test flight supported by Lift with one of our K9s, Jedi, in the cabin of a commercial flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town. This is a first for the Search and Rescue industry in South Africa. Our partnership with Lift will reduce our deployment time and ensure that our teams and K9s arrive rested and ready to work.”
The not-for-profit volunteer association, which trains air-scenting search dogs, said, “Thank you to the (LIFT) staff and crew on both our flights for an exceptional experience and world class service.”
South Africans have welcomed the news on social media. N Botha said, “Well done Lift! This passenger can sit next to me anytime” M Billings added, “Outstanding. This is normal practise in Europe, great to see. Salute To Handlers and K9s.” And K Moodley wrote, “That’s so amazing! I truly hope LIFT Airline will allow the public to take their large doggies in cabin soon soon. I would absolutely love to share that experience with my pup before she departs this life”
