Light aircraft crashes near NASREC, Johannesburg; two people killed
Two people were killed on Sunday morning, 15 January 2023, when a light aircraft crashed into the side of a mine dump near the FNB Stadium at NASREC south of Johannesburg. The accident was reported by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC). Emergency services responded to the scene, along with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Civil Aviation Authorities (SACAA). Nana Radebe, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services, said “The City of Johannesburg EMS responded to an aircraft crash near FNB stadium at NASREC. On arrival, the fire fighters found two people who had died on scene inside the crashed aircraft.”
The light aircraft was on a training flight, according to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). “The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has been informed of an aircraft accident occurrence on Sunday at 9am. The aircraft departed from Grand Central Airport on a training flight with the intention to land back at the same airport. On-board the aircraft were two occupants, who both sustained fatal injuries.” The aircraft itself sustained substantial damage.” The SACAA said a preliminary report would be issued in 30 days.
Four members of SARZA also responded. “SARZA was appointed incident command (IC), assisted in making the scene safe and assisted with the recovery of the deceased.”
Other agencies on scene included SAPS, Gauteng Emergency Medical Services, City of Johannesburg EMS, Netcare911, ER24 EMS, Gauteng Forensic Pathology, Mountain Club of South Africa Search and Rescue and Hamnet Gauteng.
