Ionia firefighter killed when two apparatus collide responding to fire, US

On Sunday, 22 October 2023, Ionia Fire Department firefighters were responding to a cornfield fire. A pumper was driven by a member of the department and a converted Polaris Ranger UTV fire vehicle was driven by Captain Anthony “Tony” Hoffman. Captain Hoffman reared off and hit the side of the pumper, causing him to lose control and crash. He was ejected from the vehicle.
He was immediately airlifted to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he passed away a short time later. The other firefighter driving the pumper was not hurt.
The crash happened on Exeter Avenue North of 215 Street in Ionia at 16h00.
The department said Hoffman was a 17-year veteran of the department.
“Please keep the brothers/sisters and families of the dept. in your thoughts and prayers after the tragic accident today,” the department said via Facebook.
Gov Kim Reynolds ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in honour of Hoffman.
“Anthony Hoffman’s service and dedication to the Ionia community will never be forgotten,” Reynolds said in a news release. “Iowa is stronger because of Anthony Hoffman who volunteered to put his life on the line to protect his community. As we lower flags, let’s honour his legacy and service.”
