ETS Industrial Emergency Response Team Competition 2023

Picture
This year’s ETS Industrial Emergency Response Team Competition took place on Thursday, 28 September 2023, at ETS Emergency Training Solutions’ training centre in Redan, with 24 teams participating in up to four events each, scrutinised by 28 judges and officials. The purpose of the competition is to provide emergency responders from all sectors of industry an opportunity to sharpen their skills and compete against other emergency response teams in simulated scenarios including firefighting and other essential skills.

The Main Event
The Main Event saw six team members participating in this event. The event involved at least one fire. This event tested the ability of a small team of six (including the team leader) to use their resourcefulness to resolve an incident. Mini scenarios were injected into the main event to test the team’s incident management skills with at least two judges judging this event. ETS provided the following firefighting equipment to all teams: 3x 65mm lay flat hose, 3x 45 mm lay flat hose, 3 x 38 mm lay flat hose, 1 x dividing breaching and 3 x adjustable nozzles (branches). ETS reserved the right to make additional items of equipment available, in order to give teams “options” and /or additional challenges. The team scoring the highest points according to the judge sheet criteria won. All team members had to always wear their full PPE while participating. SCBA was not required for this event. Full PPE included approved bunker jacket, bunker pants, firefighting boots, firefighting gloves, balaclava and helmet. PPE were inspected by the judges before any team was allowed to participate.

Skills Event
The Skills Event consisted of fire PPE donning and hose laying event. All participants had to participate in this event. Each one of the participants had to don their full PPE within one minute to avoid penalties. Full PPE meant bunker jacket, bunker pants, firefighting boots, firefighting gloves, balaclava and helmet. The team had to couple up their hoses to hydrants, run out hoses, divide and collect hose lines, charge hose lines, replace possible burst length of hose and hit a target with their hose streams. Points were deducted for failure to perform important tasks such as not flushing hydrants, failing to check hose seals or misuse of equipment. The team completing the event in the fastest time with the least penalties won.

Toughest Fire Team Event
This event was a relay event and each of the six team members participated in the first of the six events wearing full PPE but excluding SCBA. Five team members participated in the second event, four in the third event and so on until only one team member participated in the last event. The events included water obstacle: six team members had to traverse a water obstacle, before five team members could move on to the next event. Second was the bucket brigade where five team members had to transport water from one 210 litre drum to another, via a ladder to a one-storey height, using a human chain, to fill another 210-litre drum, before four team members could move onto the next event. The followed the ladder carry with four team members carrying an extension ladder over a specified distance of 30 metres. The ladder bridging followed with three team members traversing a horizontally-placed ladder before moving on to the next event. Then came the tyre drag with two team members dragging a tyre back and forth by gripping hose lines that were attached to the tyre. Finally the charged hose line drag followed where one participant had to drag a charged hose line over 15 metres and placed the nozzle down over the line before the event is over. The team with completing the event in the fastest time with the least penalties won.

Psychomotor skills
Definition: “of or relating to motor action directly proceeding from mental activity.”

Squad drill
In the time leading up to the competition, teams had to develop a squad drill with the purpose to demonstrate their squad drill on the day of the competition. Teams had to prepare a squad drill involving six team members not exceeding two minutes. Points were awarded by the judges for the following aspects:
1. Appearance: Upon inspection during a parade and during the drill, points will be awarded for uniformity of clothing, neatness and matching. Expense and the amount of money spent on appearance will not result in additional points being awarded.
2. Creativity: Well, thought out choreography, uniqueness and “X factor” actions will earn extra points for a team.
3. Technical: Are basic moves achieved such as dressing (spacing between members), marching, left and right turns, synchronisation, degree of difficulty and timing (timing should be close to but not exceeding two minutes).

Participating teams included Sappi Ngodwana, Sappi Saiccor – Spartans, Sappi Stanger “Team Fired Up”, Sappi Tugela, Anglo Waterfal Extraction Giants, Anglo American - Fire Crackers, Anglo American Hurricanes, Anglo PMR Team, Anglo Tree Fellers, Anglo Rise North, Seriti Stone Matla, Seriti Venom, Team Charnaud, Exxaro - Miner Leagues, Dwarsrivier – Bulldogs, Team - SA Mint, Eskom Majuba PS, Eskom Matla PS, Eskom Kriel PS, Eskom Camden PS, Eskom Medupi Gladiators, Eskom Medupi Worriers, Eskom Arnot PS and Team Heineken.
