Fire breaks out at Ekurhuleni’s Simmer and Jack landfill site

A fire broke out at Simmer and Jack landfill site near the Geldenhuys interchange in Germiston in Ekurhuleni on Thursday, 26 October 2023, which has led to a temporary closure of the site. All necessary resources have been deployed to extinguish the fire. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “The call was received at 15h00 and local firefighters responded swiftly for intervention. Various fire stations around our Northern region are operating on site. They change over shifts after certain time frame.”
Ntladi added, “The primary responders were Primrose, assisted by Bedfordview, Edenvale, Germiston Central, Kempton Park, Thembisa, Commercial and Farrarmere fire stations. On scene we assigned two water tankers, three rescue pumpers and two major industrial pumpers. One major pumper was stationary pumping water while others were shuttling water from outside the landfill.”
“There is an emission of thick carbon smoke from the burning materials. Due to strong wind blowing in different directions, nearby residents and motorists are alerted to be cautious when approaching the interchange (N3 and M2 freeways) and other surrounding routes because of possible vision obscurement, which might lead to fatal crashes.”
The fire was extinguished at the beginning of November 2023. Although the fire has been extinguished, there is still smoke coming out from the landfill site. The city’s emergency services teams remain on site to monitor the situation.
The landfill site remains temporarily closed for operations until all is cleared.
