Three dead, scores injured in Cape Town bus accident amidst severe weather

Three people were killed and 21 others injured after a Golden Arrow bus overturned on Jakes Gerwel Drive, near Athlone in Cape Town. The bus overturned just before 09h00 in what has been described as a freak accident. Reports indicate that the bus had just pulled away after having a passenger disembark and while gathering speed, a strong crosswind overturned the bus.
All emergency services were despatched and Traffic Services performed a road closure between Turfhall and Klipfontein Roads, while Fire and Rescue staff assisted medical responders in the efforts to attend to the injured.
The injured were taken to Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain hospitals.
City of Cape Town’s Alderman JP Smith said, “Sadly, three passengers succumbed to their injuries on scene. The scene was taken over by SAPS Accident Response Unit, with road closures in place until 14h00.”
The crash was captured on CCTV showing the astonishing moment the bus went airborne after colliding with the pavement.
The bus company said the bus driver has been suspended pending internal and police investigations into the matter.
Several roads were closed due to heavy rainfall and excessive flooding across large parts of the Western Cape. The province was experiencing an intense cold front, bringing with it gale-force winds.
