Firefighters conquer Two Oceans half marathon in full gear for a noble cause

In a remarkable display of endurance and determination, City of Cape Town firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan, alongside their Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) counterparts, Liam Gannon and Steve Akester, achieved an impressive feat at the Two Oceans Half Marathon on 14 Sunday, April 2024. Crossing the finish line in just two hours and 46 minutes, the quartet shattered their targeted time of three hours and 15 minutes.
What makes their achievement all the more extraordinary is the fact that Jermaine and Renaldo completed the gruelling 21-kilometre race clad in their full bunker gear, including their self-contained breathing apparatus, adding an extra 10 kilograms to their load. Meanwhile, Liam and Steve ran the race in their full wildfire gear. Such a challenge required rigorous training that undoubtedly took a toll on their bodies, making their race day performance a true test of endurance and perseverance.
Beyond the personal feat, their participation in the marathon was driven by a noble cause – to raise funds for the Volunteer Wildfire Services. With an ambitious goal of generating R400 000 in donations, the quartet embarked on this challenging journey with the aim of supporting their fellow firefighters and the essential work they undertake to safeguard communities and natural habitats from wildfires.
