Cape Town’s Valley Timbers in flames
A fire broke out at Valley Timbers situated on the corner of Kommetjie and Lekkerwater roads in Sunnydale, Cape Town early Sunday morning, 25 September 2022. Spokesperson at the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, said, “The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 04h35. The report indicated that a sawmill with a a high fuelload timber yard as well as an office space was burning.”
Carelse added, “The following fire stations attended: Kommetjie with a fire engine, skid unit and water tanker, Lakeside with a fire engine and water tanker, Simon’s Town with a fire engine, Constantia with a fire engine, Mitchells Plain with a fire engine, Bellville with a water tanker, Ottery with a water tanker and rescue vehicle and Fish Hoek with a fire engine.” “The crews managed to contain the spread of fire by surrounding the structure and dealing with exposure protection at the same time. The fire was extinguished at 08h22, however, crews went to monitor the area for any flare ups during the course of Sunday and closed the command at 16h55”, said Carelse. “Challenges faced included the intense heat the crews had to endure.
