Midvaal Fire Department hosts Fit to Fight Challenge 2024 in Meyerton, Gauteng
Midvaal Fire Department hosted its second Fit to Fight Fire Challenge at the Meyerton Sports Club on Saturday, 25 May 2024. The event started off a parade followed by the formal opening, which included the singing of the National Anthem by Caitie Rock and Johan van Rooyen. The opening was done by Chaplain Jan Combrink, followed by the official welcome by CFO Hannes Steyn, Midvaal Fire Department’s chief fire officer.
SAESI president, Theresa Geldenhuys, provided an overview of SAESI’s current programme and status, followed by Councillor Gerrit Viljoen, MMC for Public Safety and Roads, who thanked all the sponsors and participants for their enthusiasm and support as well as the organising team Tertius Engelbrecht, Morné Mommsen and Hettie Fowlds. MMC Viljoen also thanked all fire fighters and first responders for their dedicated support.
Midvaal Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, shared a warm welcome, saying the Midvaal Fire teams make him and the community proud, highlighting the state-of-the-art technology and equipment that assist their firefighters to respond to any eventuality safely. Lance Oosthuisen concluded with a prayer followed by the performance of the Firefighter’s Prayer by Caitie Rock.
There were several musical performances including local group, 4 Eva Young, Dihan and various local radio stations.
The North West University ran an EMS competition alongside the challenge with and EMS simulation demonstration for the public. See separate article.
Other demonstrations included a K9 demonstration by the Genesis K9 Group, CPR demonstration by CERT, extrication demonstration by Hamilton Hydraulics and a snake handling demonstration by Access Professional Development.
There was also a gumboot dancing performance by Lakeside Primary School.
The Midvaal Fit to Fight Fire Challenge saw approximately 4 500 t0 5 000 people attending, which included the participating teams and exhibitors. This year 32 units of blood donated at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) stand.

There were also 13 local food vendors.
The challenge included five stages with the first four stages being done as a four-person relay and the last stage by the whole team ie
Stage 1: Foam carry 2x 20l canisters followed by the Kaizer Force machine (85kg) sponsored by Industrial Fire and Hazard Control
Stage 2: 80kg mannequin drag for 60m sponsored by Survival Technology
Stage 3: Tower run up five flights of stairs with 45mm flaked hose and then hoisting 65mm hose up with a rope, down the stairs with the flaked hose sponsored by Industrial Fire and Hazard Control
Stage 4: 80kg tyre flip for 24m sponsored by Tough Tyres
Stage 5: 56kg ladder run for 400m (whole team) sponsored by Industrial Fire and Hazard Control.
Judges
The judges were from City of Ekurhuleni, Emfuleni, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, private, ETS, Lesedi and Motlasana, totalling 275 years of experience in the fire service.
