NWU Faculty of Health Sciences ALS Training Centre holds EMS simulation competition at Midvaal
On 25 May 2024, an EMS simulation competition organised by the North West University’s (NWU) Faculty of Health Sciences ALS Training Centre and EpicEM, drew teams from across South Africa to showcase their skills in emergency medical scenarios at the Midvaal Fit to Fight Fire Challenge 2024.
The event challenged participants to navigate through a series of simulated emergencies, testing their abilities to respond effectively under pressure. Each team, comprising members trained in Basic Life Support (BLS), Intermediate Life Support (ILS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), showcased their proficiency in managing critical situations.
With an emphasis on adherence to International Trauma Life Support guidelines and HPCSA scopes, teams were evaluated based on their performance in various Clinical conditions.
Unlike traditional competitions, where jump bags are typically provided, participants were tasked with bringing their own equipment, including personal items such as stethoscopes, scissors and other personal protective equipment (PPE). However, all necessary large equipment to manage patients was readily available on-site, allowing teams to focus solely on their response strategies.
The competition saw a diverse array of teams vying for the top honours, with representation from areas including Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and the Vaal region. Each team brought its unique flair, with creative uniforms and attire setting them apart on the field of competition.
After a day filled with intense simulations and impressive displays of skill, the winners emerged triumphant.
Marcel Nel led the charge in Basic Life Support, while Ruan Cato showcased proficiency in Intermediate Life Support. Danielle Sparrow rounded out the winning team with her expertise in Advanced Life Support. The winners represented ER24 Potchefstroom branch.
External and independent judges were tasked to evaluate the teams based on their performances.
Hugo Minnaar, one of the judges, provided his feedback, “A well-coordinated and surely a great opportunity to test, learn and practice skills. It is super important to stay update and practice evidence-based medicine next to the road, what we do next to the road does have a major impact on the patient’s overall morbidity or morality.”
“What an honour to be amongst the legends of prehospital emergency medicine, whose dedication to education and high-fidelity simulation training have set new standards to enhance skills and knowledge to improve best practices. Their innovative approaches and relentless pursuit of excellence ensure that EMS professionals are exceptionally prepared to save lives”, said Maqshuda Kajee one of the judges.
The event not only served as a platform for friendly competition but also as an opportunity for participants to enhance their emergency response capabilities and foster camaraderie within the EMS community.
