Fundamentals of Fire Safety Engineering Course at Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University will be running an intensive seminar for engineers, built environment and fire safety professionals on the fundamentals of fire safety. The main speakers are Dr Noah Ryder (USA) and John Ivison (Canada) along with Prof Richard Walls, Dr Natalia Flores-Quiroz and Dr Antonio Cicione. The course will be a face-to-face from 15 to 19 August 2022. The five-day CPD course content is specifically designed to cover a variety of topics relevant for fire safety design.
 
The course can be taken as a five ECSA CPD-point-accredited course or as university short course with examination with the same content of a masters level engineering course. The content is accessible to practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, providing an understanding of fire safety principles, demonstrations and a visit to a fire testing laboratory.
 
The course is being hosted at Ignis Testing in Cape Town such that delegates will be able to visit a fire lab and understand fire testing, material behaviour in fire and watch demonstrations.
 
Specific topics covered include:

• Introduction to fire safety
• Material characteristics in fire
• Passive protection
• Fire detection and communication systems
• Smoke management
• Suppression system
• Evacuation and human behaviour in fire
• Hazard and risk analysis
• Performance-based design (rational design)
