Dräger South Africa Fire Combat and Rescue Challenge 2023

Dräger South Africa held its annual Fire Combat and Rescue Challenge 2023 at its head office in Johannesburg on Thursday, 27 July 2023. The whole day event included new product presentations showcasing new technology from Dräger, keeping fire fighters safe while the challenge included the tower stage, a fitness stage and Dräger’s Mobile Training Gallery (MTG).
Participants who were from both municipal and private fire services, included 27 teams for the relay event and 38 individuals.
Teams consisted out of JB Marks Municipality, City of Tshwane, Midvaal Fire Department, Garden Route District Municipality, City of Johannesburg/Lesedi Fire and Rescue, City of Ekurhuleni, West Rand District Municipality, City of Matlosana, Fire Ops SA, Lanseria International Airport, Netcare 911, RCL Foods, ETS Emergency Training Solutions and Harmony Moab Khotsong.
Dräger presentations
Head of marketing for Safety at Dräger South Africa, Willem Liebenberg, started off the day with an overview of Dräger, breathing systems and solutions that Dräger has to offer for the market and sharing an informative synopsis of where Dräger started supporting lives and saving lives over 100 years ago.
Dräger South Africa’s business field manager for Emergency and Rescue Services, Wimpie van Onselen, had the ultimate treat of showcasing upcoming and available equipment like new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) PSS AirBoss Connect with the new accountability/telemetry system that works wirelessly and incorporates new age technology with GPS tracking on the fire ground. He also introduced the new helmet-worn, thermal imaging camera, the Dräger UCF Fire Core that is the latest in the arsenal from the Dräger Fire team to support fire fighting and rescue work. With the latest technology these systems stood out as the solution for the future fire fighter.
Dräger had many exhibitors and partners on display this year, including Hamilton Hydraulics, ETS Emergency Training Solutions and Rebel Elite fitness. Fire and Rescue International was the photographers for the event.
This year the event was a true Dräger event, where the Dräger team took over the reins and made it bigger and better.
Tower stage
All stages had to be completed under air and using the new PSS Airboss, nano cylinder and HPS Safeguard to emphasise the lightweight system and ergonomics behind it. The first competitor made their way up the flights flights of stairs with a 25kg hose pack. On top of the tower the teammate was tagged and the second team member had to hoist a 25kg bag by rope and go down the tower. The third teammate was tasked to confront the Keiser Machine with a hammer for a predesignated length and complete an obstacle course to hand over to the fourth teammate. The fourth team mate then carried a charged hose and hit a target before continuing to the last team member that had to carry the Rescue Randy to the finish line. The individuals had to complete this course by themselves.
Rescue stage: Dräger’s Mobile Training Gallery (MTG)
It was a tough competition with Dräger’s own Mobile Training Gallery (MTG) that tested the competitor’s mental and physical strength to navigate in a dark and simulated smoke environment. The MTG did offer a challenging scenario for the teams as they had to identify only two members to navigate the maze with competitors sweating through the challenge. The competitors did not just have to navigate the maze but when they exited the maze, they had to be assisted by their other team members to secure the Rescue Randy in a basket stretcher and use the correct rope techniques to ensure they can finish the challenge. Some competitors could not finish as the maze was just too challenging.
Fitness stage
The Dräger friends from the fitness industry, Rebel Elite Fitness, brought their toys to again test the teams to the maximum of their fitness. Dräger’s partners, Rebel Elite Fitness made the teams work in this year’s event with some different activities. The teams had to test their endurance on a rowing machine while the other four teammates had to do hold an 80kg barbell in the air, all while the other teammate worked through the sleds and medicine ball, in full bunker gear. This was one of the toughest challenges some competitors faced as it tested the limits of their mental and physical strength.
